From the President
By Steve Hanlin
CDAA PresidentThis past April the Cavalier Daily
Alumni Association Board of Directors elected me president of the organization. I accepted
this very challenging responsibility for two reasons. First, the CDAA has great potential
to become a very active organization that provides major benefits to the current CD staff
and to its members. I want to help move us in that direction. Second, the CD provided me
with opportunities unmatched at the University, and I want to give back to the CD and to
its alumni who made these opportunities possible.
My Cavalier Daily career started in 1990 when I nervously climbed
Newcomb Hall's stairs to the fifth floor. My goal was to become a staff photographer so I
could get as close to the action at all the sporting events as possible. As many of you
experienced, this small objective soon grow exponentially into more responsibility. For
me, I became a Photo Associate Editor, then Photo Editor and then in 1992, Business
Manager. After graduating with an MIS/Marketing degree in 1994 I moved to Northern
Virginia where I currently work at Metron, Inc. I help market and sell a decision support
system called TerrAlign to other businesses.
My goals for the CDAA include:
- Holding two first-class social events each year. We
got a great start in June when the CDAA hosted a cocktail party during reunion weekend for
its alumni and their families. It was a full-catered event with an open bar and plenty of
food. I greatly enjoyed talking with everyone who attended!
The second event is going to be a tailgate party before Virginia's homecoming football
game on Saturday, October 4. No location has been arranged at this time but invitations
will be sent well in advance of the event. The CDAA will provide the food and beverages
for all interested CD alumni and the current CD staff. My thanks to Diane DeBerry for
volunteering her time as the Events Director. Please RSVP to me via e-mail (hanlin@metsci.com) or phone (703-528-9317) if you are
interested in attending. This will help us in planning.
- Providing more support for Lisa Guernsey's already
outstanding programming efforts. As shown in these pages, Lisa is already well
into planning workshops for next year. I encourage everyone to attend the workshop in
Charlottesville on September 20. It will be tremendous!
Currently Lisa is doing most of the planning for these events on her own. I would like to
find a few more volunteers to help her with planning and organizing of workshops and
related events. Another goal is to compile a complete list of CD alumni who are willing to
volunteer their time and knowledge and lead a workshop. This list will help facilitate
Lisa's efforts.
- Facilitate networking between CD alumni and between CD alumni
and the CD staff. This goal has many parts.
The CDAA must provide a means to easily disseminate information. Matt Lane has create a
CDAA web site that can service as the main communication vehicle. It is located at www.cdalumni.org. He will soon add bulletin board
capabilities that will allow alumni to post job openings and other messages for the CD
staff and CD alumni to see.
Next we need to gather more detailed information about our membership. Update addresses,
phone number, e-mail addresses. Find out who has access to the World Wide Web and e-mail
to decide if a web page is the best means of communication. Most importantly identify the
members who would be willing to field correspondence with CD alumni and staff about their
careers, etc.
Implement the updated data in our web site and promote it to the membership and the CD.
This web site can be used to find a long lost friend's phone number or to try and find out
more about a career path.
- Increase communication with the CD staff. This is
primarily my and Editor-in-Chief Robin Pinnel's responsibility. I will attend at
least one CD staff meeting to introduce myself and the CDAA to the CD. Most of the CD
staff does not know about the CDAA and the services we provide. My objective is the
educate them and to listen to their needs and ideas. Holding events such as the tailgate
party will also increase the communication between us.
- Completing the Endowed Scholarship Fund by next April's
meeting. Currently with John Herring's generosity and the CDAA match of his $500
donation we are awarding the annual Herring Scholarship to one CD staffer who has a
media-related summer internship. With the combined financial efforts of the CD and the
CDAA I would like to have $50,000 set aside by April for the scholarship fund. This amount
will allow us to expand to three annual scholarship of $1,000 each. I would like to award
two in April 1998 and expand to three in April 1999. In order to reach this $50,000 goal
the CDAA will hold another fund raiser in the coming months.
Stay tuned and please keep this Endowed Scholarship Fund in mind when making contribution
to the University. All donations to the CDAA are counted towards the University's Capital
Campaign and are tax deductible. Please send contributions to The Cavalier Daily Alumni
Association, P.O. Box 4731, Charlottesville, VA 22905
- Facilitating Matt Branson's effort to document the history of
The Cavalier Daily. Obviously this is a huge undertaking and we need to find
volunteers to write, interview, and just help Matt manage this project. One goal I have
set for Matt is to try and document the history of all the awards that are distributed by
the CD. This will give the CD a perspective on why these awards were established and the
significance of each.
I look forward to the challenge of completing these goals and I look
forward to working with you soon. Please contact me if you would like to volunteer or make
a comment: home: 703-528-9317, work: 703-437-2464, e-mail: hanlin@metsci.com.
