| 1997 Cavalier Daily Conference Set Two Pulitzer Prize-winning Journalists Head Speakers List By Lisa Guernsey and Nancy A. Youssef Cavalier Daily staffers hoping to meet two Pulizer Prize winning journalists will have their opportunity Sept. 20 when the CDAA and the Cavalier Daily welcome professional reporters to the third annual Cavalier Daily Conference. Through speeches and workshops, the conference is designed to give staffers a chance to learn from CD alumni about the professional field. This year, Mike Vitez, from the Philadelphia Inquirer, will speak about his feature-writing experiences and Earl Lane, from Newsday, will describe his role in covering prominent national events. A question and answer period will follow. Both won the Pulizer Prize last year. Vitez won for a five-part series entitled "Final Choices: Choosing the Good Death," about people coping with the prospect of death. Lane was part of the team of 30 who won for their coverage of the TWA Flight 800 crash last July. Vitez was the Cavalier Daily Editor-in-Chief during the 1978-79 school year. Earl Lane's daughter, Katie Lane, is now the administrative reporter for the CD. After the speeches, Vitez and Lane will join five other journalists as part of seven-part workshop. Geoff Johson, from The Washington Post, Kevin Seifert from The Washington Times, Greg Trevor from The Asbury Park Press and John Spaulding from The Chronicle of Higher Education will talk about various facets of the field--including photography, spot news coverage, libel and hearsay, and opinion writing. Robert O'Neil, former University president and First Amendment Law Professor has also been invited to speak about legal issues in journalism. The panelists will work with current Cavalier Daily Junior Board editors to create workshops that engage guests in an active, informal discussion about each particular field. This year's conference marks the largest of its kind. It will take place in the Newcomb Hall Ballroom from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, and is free and open to the public. |
