| CD Conference Planned Annual Journalism Event Slated for Oct. 10 By Robin Swanson Once again fulfilling its role as the University of Virginias journalism school, The Cavalier Daily and the Cavalier Daily Alumni Association are gearing up for the Fifth Annual Fall Journalism Workshop, to be held Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Newcomb Hall Ballroom. "The fall journalism conference is designed to educate not only Cavalier Daily staff, but the rest of the University as well," said Cavalier Daily Editor-In-Chief Mike Greenwald. "We hope to do our part to advance the study of journalism at the University of Virginia." Event organizer and Cavalier Daily Managing Editor Emily Kane said she already has confirmed two guest speakers: John Pancake, style and arts editor for The Washington Post, and Stephanie Mencimer, a senior writer for the Washington, D.C., City Paper. Kane said she hopes to bring in eight speakers for the conference so each participant can receive more individualized attention. "I hope to personalize this workshop so that students who attend can get their own work critiqued as well as receive sound career advice," Kane said. Kane added that she also is making a special effort this year to include guests from a wide variety of journalism backgrounds, including online press. "We want people who come to the conference to be exposed to a broad range of journalists," Kane said. "We want them to know that you can really make a living from this kind of work." |
