| Life After the CD After 12 years working in public relations, marketing and recruitment with the same health care company, projects editor Anne Adler Abraham (82) took the plunge and went out on her own. Now, as a freelance writer and public relations/marketing consultant, she says she makes her own hours, takes on fun projects and spends more time with her two daughters (ages 2 and 3). She and her husband just bought a new house in Norfolk, Va. CD editorial editor Walter W. Bardenwerper (73) is the vice president and general counsel of Watson Wyatt Worldwide in Washington, DC. He has five children, ages 23 to 9. Jennifer Gibert Barnes (opinion page editor 93-94) married Jason Barnes, a Ga. Tech grad, on Oct. 10, 1998. A number of CDers were in attendance. Jason and Jennifer are both attorneys in Dallas, Texas. Jennifer is a litigator and says "all of that practice writing persuasive columns has really come in handy." News editor Adam Bell (88) is back in the South and now works as a half editor, half reporter for the Charlotte Observer. He and his wife, Elin, have a son, Jordan. Andrea Ringler Blakemore (advertising manager 89-90) is a special education teacher in the Fairfax County (Va.) Public Schools. She says, "I (former ads person) teach journalism (a loose interpretation) to a bunch of wild high school kids. Ironically, the only ads we do are in-house for school events and causes." CD editor-in-chief and managing editor Richard H. ("Dick") Carlton (65) has been the president of a Richmond, Va.-based PR and advertising agency since 1975. He is the father of two grown children and says he is the "grandfather of a future CD editor." Chris Boynton (sports editor 91-92) graduated from the Marshall-Whythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary in 1995. He now has a commercial litigation practice at Cooper, Spong & Davis in Hampton Roads, Va. Sports editor Jeff Carlton (92) has been covering high school sports for the Greensboro News & Record since January 1998. He married Suzanne Garofalo, whom he met while both were copy editors for the Charlottesville Daily Progress, on May 30, 1999. Courtney Baker Clarke (managing editor 84-85) is the director of communications and marketing for the Northern Ohio Chapter of the March of Dimes. She lives in Cleveland with her husband, John Clarke (business manager 84-85), who is the president of brightnet.net, an internet service provider. The couple has an 8-year-old daughter, Evelyn, and is expecting another child in September. Laura Conner (managing editor 92-93) is an attorney for the tax division of the Department of Justice and lives in Arlington, Va. Editor-in-chief Robert Cullen (70) is a freelance writer in Chevy Chase, Md. He has published 10 books on topics ranging from golf to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. CD reporter William Page Dame, III (63) is currently the business manager for the Alexandria Country Day School in Alexandria, Va. He became a banker specializing in international trade and finance and entered the field of independent school administration in 1993. He says that writing skills have been critical in every phase of his professional career. Diane DeBerry (editor-in-chief 90-91) is finishing up her third year in consulting at PricewaterhouseCoopers and is getting married to Dean Krehmeyer (Comm 92) on Oct. 16, 1999, in the University Chapel. Mitch Frank (executive editor 95-96) has worked for Entertainment Weekly and TIME and is also a contributing writer for several online magazines and a weekly columnist for Journal X. Mitch will marry former CD AME Catherine Shnaider (98-99) in New Orleans on March 25, 2000. Sheri Miltenberger Garrou (advertising manager 90-91) and Doug Garrou (production editor 87-88) were married in September of 1992. They lived in Seattle, Wash., from 1991 until they moved to Richmond, Va., in 1996. While in Washington, Sheri earned a masters of library science at the University of Washington. At graduation, she was awarded the "Ruth Worden" plaque for the most outstanding student. She worked as a high school librarian for one year in Richmond before leaving to have twins, James and Thomas, who were born in November of 1997. Michael F. Graham (managing editor 81-82) is married to fellow CD alum Elizabeth Armstrong (83), and just received tenure and promotion in the history department at the University of Akron (Ohio). Elizabeth and Michael have three children: Davey (12), Kate (8) and Sean (4). A job at The New York Times (as a reporter for Circuits) has led Lisa Guernsey (executive editor 92-93) and her husband, Rob Krupicka, to try life in the Big Apple. Theyre learning to master the subway and are now spoiled for good restaurants. Shortly after graduation, Ann Gibson (operations manager 88-89) started working for the Associated Press in Richmond, Va. She moved to Louisville, Ky., in 1991 where she has been the AP news editor for Kentucky since mid-1998. In September of 1999, she is marrying Dave Baker, a newspaper reporter. After completing a fellowship in asthma, allergy and immunology at U.Va., photographer William Hark, M.D. (89) returned to Richmond, Va., and joined Catlett Allergy Associates. He continues to do photography and has sold photos of the Hale-Bopp comet over the Rotunda and had other photos published. Photographer Lon Holmberg (67) is a documentary film maker and retired English professor living in Annapolis, Md. He says he is still taking photographs and writing. After graduation in 1988, lifestyles editor Hillary Homzie tried a variety of career choices: waitress, radio reporter for WJMA Orange, publicist for the Pennsylvania Ballet, sketch comedian in New York City, temp, pre-school French teacher, hospital marketing, library assistant, and freelance writer for New York Newsday. She then completed a masters in education at Temple University and a masters in childrens writing at Hollins University. Currently she is writing a fiction series for 8 to 12-year-olds for Simon & Schuster. She is married and has a son named Jonah. Lifestyles editor Rebecca James (85) married a fellow journalist, David Hill. The couple has two daughters: Josephine, who was born in January 1997, and Corinne, who was born in December 1998. Rebecca works part-time for the Syracuse (NY) Post-Standard as the only reporter in the Ithaca bureau, which mainly exists because of Cornell University. She covers a lot of higher education stories and features. CD proofreader Douglas Jordan (65) is a retired Navy Commander and a Vietnam veteran. He now makes his home in Northern Virginia. Sung Kim (advertising manager 94-95) will be attending a full time MBA program at UNC-Chapel Hill this fall. Operations Manager Matthew Lane (96) is pursuing his physics Ph.D. at the University of Texas in Austin. Monisha Kumar Longacre (operations manager 91-92) is pleased to announce the birth of her daughter, Maya Kumari Longacre on May 14, 1999. Kathy Lopez (lifestyles editor 88-89) is pursuing a graduate degree in modern Chinese history at the University of Michigan. Her dissertation will be on the history of the Chinese Diaspora in Cuba. In March of 1999, she went to Cuba on a two-week research trip. After teaching English in Virginia Beach for 10 years, production editor Linda J. Love (83) ventured into administering school-to-work programs with Technical and Career Education (TCE). She uses her CD skills to write, edit and produce TCE publications and promote opportunities to train youth for the workplace. Managing editor Rod MacDonald (70) sang in nightclubs in Greenwich Village, NYC, for more than 20 years, during which he recorded several solo albums and co-founded the annual Greenwich Village Folk festival. He now lives in south Florida and tours the United States and Europe a few times each year. Recently his version of "Pleasures of the Harbor" was included on "Whats That I Hear: The Songs of Phil Ochs," a collection of Phil Ochs songs by some of the most distinguished artists in acoustic music today. Photographer and columnist Kevin Mannix (71) has been married to Susanna Chiocca (Nursing 74) since 1974. They have two sons and a daughter. Kevin is now in his fifth term as a member of the Oregon House of Representatives and says he still enjoys photography. Former news and life writer Caroline Miller (90) has left the Air Force and is now an orthopedic surgery resident at Wake Forest University. In June she married George Jacob Triepel, a navy officer. Sports editor Mark Moring (81) is now the editor of Christianity Online magazine and the senior associate editor of Campus Life magazine, which are both published by Christianity Today Inc. After a 12-year career as a newspaper sports writer, Mark says he turned to the magazine business for two reasons: 1) to escape the late nights and weekends so he could spend more time with his family, and 2) because he "thought it would be neat to put his Christian faith into practice in his writing and editing." Christianity Online is a Christian guide to the Internet, and Campus Life is a Christian magazine for high school students. Hes won four national writing awards in his six years with Campus Life. Hes been happily married to his wife, Nina, for 14 years. They live in the Chicago suburbs with their two "incredibly cool sons," Peter (8) and Paul (6). Jennifer Bermant OBrien (managing editor 90-91) gave birth to a son, Bennett Christiansen OBrien, on July 20, 1999. She and her husband, Webster, are currently living in Hong Kong. While shes not back in the States very often, Jennifer says she hopes to catch up with people soon. Matt Phillips (assistant managing editor 94-95) lives in Washington, D.C., and is working on the Hill as the press secretary in the office of U.S. Rep. Steve Horn (R-Calif.). Robin Pinnel (editor-in-chief 97-98) is now the publicity manager for the Gail Ross Literary Agency. After the CD, Shay Quillen (spotlight editor 91-92) was a "failed rock star, a temp and a waiter before ending up at Rounder Records, promoting roots music and its contemporary offshoots." In his spare time, he sings and plays mandolin and clarinet in the group Pommes Frites, performing rustic versions of 80s pop tunes (he calls it "old-time new wave"). This fall, hes entering the masters program in journalism at the University of Missouri. Brooks Rathet (editor-in-chief 89-90) is an attorney with the firm of Dow Lohnes & Albertson in Atlanta, Ga. He is married to Beth Knowles (CLAS 91). CD columnist Chaz Repak (91) is a news editor for Dow Jones Newswires, Dow Jones & Co. in Singapore. He helps oversee Asian copy desk operations and is also involved in various news/newsroom projects that take him around Asia. Hes also the global style editor for Dow Jones Newswires and has authored a stylebook and a forthcoming reporters and editors manual for Dow Jones Newswires, the worlds largest financial news wire service. Chaz has worked for Dow Jones since 1992 and has lived in Singapore since early 1997. He is married to the former Denise Robertazzi (from his hometown of Bloomfield, N.J.) since 1998. He also plays for the Singapore Fattboyz, the best slo-pitch softball team in Asia. Patrick Riccards (managing editor 94-95) was recently named director of The Widmeyer-Baker Group's (TWBG) health care practice. TWBG is one of the largest independent public relations firm in Washington, D.C. On Sept. 20, 1997, Laura Gomez Ryan (production editor 89-90) married Dennis Joseph Ryan of Bowie, Md. The couple now lives in Arlington, Va. Laura has been with the American Association of Museums (AAM) for the past four years and is the coordinator for the AAM Museum Accreditation Program. Dennis works for the General Services Administration of the federal government. Candice Shepherd (business manager 96-97) has finished her second year at University of Michigan Law School. She spent this summer working as a summer associate for the law firm of McGuire Woods Battle & Boothe in Richmond, Va. CD ads page editor Jennifer McNeil Tarry (91) lives in Richmond, Va., where she is in investment banking with the firm of Ewing Monroe Bemiss & Co. Jennifer is married to Sam Tarry (CLAS 91) and has two children: a daughter, Cameron, and a son, Pierce. CD photographer Dave van Bakergem (72) is an architect/urban designer/campus planner for Washington University. He says hes still a photographer, too. Kellie Young Wallace (86), a CD graphics staff member, was married after graduation and has four children. In addition to being a full-time mom, she has done some freelance art through the years, as well as serving as an editor for various newsletters. Because her husband is in the military, Kellies family moves every few years. They currently reside in Northern Virginia. After graduation, copy editorJulia Wilkinson (87) worked for a little company called Quantum Computer Services in 1988, which turned into America Online. She left AOL in 1997 to work for the Internet startup company womenCONNECT.com. She is now a columnist there and lives in Alexandria, Va. She is married to attorney J. Nicholas Gallagher and has a 5-year-old daughter and 7-month-old son. John Page Williams (editor-in-chief 30-31) was a Rhodes scholar after graduation from U.Va. before returning to the United States to serve as a master at the Groton School, headmaster at St. Christophers and then the Dean of Church Schools for the Diocese of Virginia, Inc. from 1951-75. Darlene Sprinkle Wood (76), a former CD technical writer and assistant features editor, has been married for nearly 22 years to fellow Wahoo Jim Wood. Together they have two daughters, Lauren and Danielle. Darlene is a special investigator with Allstate Insurance in Pittsburgh, Pa. |
