Reunion is On; Date Moved to Homecoming Weekend, 2000

Gather your friends, your memories and your stories—true or otherwise—and get ready to celebrate the Year 2000 with the Cavalier Daily alumni and staff. The surveys are in, and the results are counted.

The reunion is ON, with one major change: It will take place during Homecoming weekend in the fall of 2000 instead of May 6 as originally planned.

"Homecoming was an easier sell," according to CDAA President Diane DeBerry. "We hope it will be more convenient for the maximum number of people to attend."

Specific plans are still being discussed, but there are a number of events that have caught the interest of alumni.

Approximately two-thirds of survey respondents were in favor of a Rotunda dinner, with the same number interested in some type of family picnic with games.

The possibility of a golf tournament is also being investigated, and no Homecoming weekend would be complete without a football game, of course.

The tentative Saturday schedule includes a gathering before the game, a family picnic during the game for those who would rather play football than watch, and a dinner to take place afterward.

"We want the picnic to be somewhere families can gather and spend the afternoon together," said CDAA Board member David Hallock, who is leading the reunion’s planning committee.

He envisions a cookout with games for adults as well as any future Hoos. There may even be an opportunity for a staff/alumni softball game. The picnic would start around 11 a.m. and continue until after the football game to give alumni a choice of activities.

After the game and picnic, alumni will be invited to gather for a dinner with speakers and, if the mood strikes, plenty of reminiscing. If the Rotunda is unavailable, the dinner will take place in a Charlottesville hotel.

USA Today columnist Taylor Buckley, a former CD movie reviewer, has agreed to serve as a speaker/master of ceremonies for this event, according to DeBerry.

During the dinner, the history of The Cavalier Daily will also be on display in the form of story boards and memorabilia. CDAA Board member Scott Ramsey is coordinating a team of alumni that is researching and writing about the history of the paper. If you are interested in joining the effort, contact Scott at (301) 982-7495 or skramsey@compuserve.com.

Volunteers are still needed to help make this weekend a success. If you would like to help plan and organize the weekend’s festivities, please contact David Hallock via email at dhallock@wmcd.com or by phone at (804) 353-7076.

In addition, class sponsors are needed who will be willing to contact fellow CD alumni from their tenure at the paper. These people will help spread information and act as a liaison between reunion planners and CD alumni. Sponsors are needed to represent all eras of the paper’s history, especially the mid-1980s and before.
