| Plans Underway for Cavalier Daily Reunion By Brooks Rathet "Reunited and it feels so good So its not a Jefferson quote, but the immortal words of the 70s song-stylists get right to the point: Cavalier Daily alumni are excited to be reuniting. Members of the CD staff past and present will get together on Grounds for a celebratory weekend Friday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000. This corresponds with the Universitys Homecoming weekend and the annual matchup between the Cavaliers and the Clemson Tigers. The weekend, however, will not just be football and cocktails. It will be a chance to have fun and reminisce, as well as an opportunity for alumni to reflect on the past while celebrating the newspapers development during the .com era and beyond. "The overarching purpose is to support The Cavalier Daily as it moves to the next millennium, while we remember what working at the paper meant to everyone," explained CDAA President Diane DeBerry Krehmeyer. "We are looking to the future while preserving the past." "Our first priority is to bring everybody back together," said Reunion Committee Chair David Hallock. "All of the CD alumni have a common bond through the generations, but have not met. Our secondary focus is to raise money for the CDAA projects to digitize the bound volumes and provide scholarships for CD staffers to participate in summer internships." Reunion planners are hoping the weekends schedule will provide something for everyone. While plans are still in the works, here is a tentative look at the weekends activities: Golf Tournament Family Picnic "There will be lots of food and organized volleyball and basketball games for those that want to let out any stress still remaining from their days at the paper," said CDAA Events Coordinator Mandy Biles. "It will be a great event for families, and we hope everyone will stop by." Football Cocktail Party Dinner at the Boars Head "I wish someone had brought a video camera," said Krehmeyer. "It was a sentimental moment we hope to repeat this year." As the newspaper continues to grow during the electronic age, the links to the past might become more distant, but no less important, according to DeBerry Krehmeyer. With this in mind, the CDAA plans to display CD historical memorabilia, highlighting the continuing efforts to preserve the newspapers bound volumes. USA Today columnist Taylor Buckley, a former CD movie reviewer, is slated to serve as a speaker/master of ceremonies for the dinner. Annual "Come as You Go" Homecoming Brunch While there is no requirement to attend all events, performing multiple taskswriting, editing, cutting, pasting, processing, partyingis nothing out of the ordinary for a CD staffer. As details become finalized this spring and summer, they will be posted on the CDAA website, www.cdalumni.org. A mailing will also be sent out this summer, said CDAA Communications Director Kim Ramsey. In addition, alumni should expect to receive e-mailings and calls regarding the events from class sponsors (See list). |
