Plans Underway for Cavalier Daily Reunion

By Brooks Rathet

"Reunited and it feels so good
Reunited ’cause we understood
There’s one perfect fit
And, sugar, this one is it
We both are so excited
’cause we’re reunited, hey, hey"
— Peaches and Herb

So it’s not a Jefferson quote, but the immortal words of the ‘70s song-stylists get right to the point: Cavalier Daily alumni are excited to be reuniting.

Members of the CD staff past and present will get together on Grounds for a celebratory weekend Friday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000. This corresponds with the University’s Homecoming weekend and the annual matchup between the Cavaliers and the Clemson Tigers.

The weekend, however, will not just be football and cocktails. It will be a chance to have fun and reminisce, as well as an opportunity for alumni to reflect on the past while celebrating the newspaper’s development during the .com era and beyond.

"The overarching purpose is to support The Cavalier Daily as it moves to the next millennium, while we remember what working at the paper meant to everyone," explained CDAA President Diane DeBerry Krehmeyer. "We are looking to the future while preserving the past."

"Our first priority is to bring everybody back together," said Reunion Committee Chair David Hallock. "All of the CD alumni have a common bond through the generations, but have not met. Our secondary focus is to raise money for the CDAA projects to digitize the bound volumes and provide scholarships for CD staffers to participate in summer internships."

Reunion planners are hoping the weekend’s schedule will provide something for everyone. While plans are still in the works, here is a tentative look at the weekend’s activities:

Golf Tournament
One can see the headline now, "CD duffers hack away." More than giving everyone a chance to swing the sticks, this CD-only tourney Friday afternoon at Birdwood Country Club will show which alumni have such cushy jobs that they can regularly practice their golf games. Details on fees for the tourney will be included in the formal invitations, which will be mailed this summer.

Family Picnic
Spawn of CD will scamper about the ball fields of the Dell Saturday afternoon as their parents eat, drink and try to keep the stories as clean as possible. The event is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m., before and during the football game.

"There will be lots of food and organized volleyball and basketball games for those that want to let out any stress still remaining from their days at the paper," said CDAA Events Coordinator Mandy Biles. "It will be a great event for families, and we hope everyone will stop by."

Football
Head on over from the picnic to watch the Hoos face off against ACC rival Clemson. A block of seats is available so CD alumni can sing "The Good Old Song" together—repeatedly. Since the number of tickets is limited, block tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis at a cost of $31 each.

Cocktail Party
Clean up, put the kids to bed and de-lint the dress clothes. The pre-dinner cocktail party, to be held at the Boar’s Head Inn Saturday evening, will give everyone a chance to catch up in a more peaceful, formal setting, thus distinguishing itself from any CD cocktail party of the past.

Dinner at the Boar’s Head
Ten years ago, when The Cavalier Daily held its Centennial celebration, the dinner turned into something more. It became a forum for alumni to share their most special experiences from their tenure at the newspaper.

"I wish someone had brought a video camera," said Krehmeyer. "It was a sentimental moment we hope to repeat this year."

As the newspaper continues to grow during the electronic age, the links to the past might become more distant, but no less important, according to DeBerry Krehmeyer. With this in mind, the CDAA plans to display CD historical memorabilia, highlighting the continuing efforts to preserve the newspaper’s bound volumes.

USA Today columnist Taylor Buckley, a former CD movie reviewer, is slated to serve as a speaker/master of ceremonies for the dinner.

Annual "Come as You Go" Homecoming Brunch
Those who have the strength, fortitude and the desire for Bloody Marys will surely want to cap off the weekend with brunch on Sunday morning from 9 a.m. to noon in the garden of Pavilion IX.

While there is no requirement to attend all events, performing multiple tasks—writing, editing, cutting, pasting, processing, partying—is nothing out of the ordinary for a CD staffer.

As details become finalized this spring and summer, they will be posted on the CDAA website, www.cdalumni.org. A mailing will also be sent out this summer, said CDAA Communications Director Kim Ramsey. In addition, alumni should expect to receive e-mailings and calls regarding the events from class sponsors (See list).
