By the numbers, The Cavalier Daily’s 113th election may sound like an exercise in inefficiency, as staff members spent 20 hours to fill 29 positions.

But for newly elected Editor-In-Chief Brandon Almond, the day-and-a-half long election instead reflects the staff’s intense dedication.

"I think it shows how deeply all the people who work here care about every decision that’s made," Almond said.

By 4:15 a.m. yesterday, staff members chose Almond, a third-year College student, to lead the newspaper in part because of the goals he outlined for the managing board.

"We want to enhance and expand our coverage through diversifying the staff and opinions of the paper," Almond said.

"We also want to foster interaction with our community, especially those we don’t have as much history working with. This is a paper for everyone in the community."

Four other managing board members will work alongside Almond to make this vision a reality.

Third-year College student Jeffrey Eisenberg will serve as the paper’s next executive editor. In this role, Eisenberg hopes to "see the opinion department flourish, to train writers’ ears and to do an exceptional job expressing the managing board’s opinions" in the daily lead editorials.

Taking over as managing editor is third-year College student Emily Roper, who said she plans to step up the paper’s recruitment efforts, particularly among minority students.

Roper also hopes to "help our staff produce the highest quality papers for our readers but also make sure that this is one of the more fun organizations to belong to on Grounds," she said.

The staff chose Justin Bernick, a second-year College student, as the paper’s chief financial officer. In this post, Bernick hopes to "help provide financial stability for the future of the newspaper to weather all kinds of difficulties, including the present economic downturn," he said.

Rounding out the managing board in the position of operations manager is second-year Engineering student Peter Jackson.

Jackson said he "would like to see the CD use bigger and better photos to make the paper more appealing to University readers."

On the senior board, third-year College students Abby Curran and Josie Roberts will serve as the next assistant managing editors. The staff named second-year Engineering student David Chu as the new director of information technology, and third-year Engineering student Aaron Gussman will take over as online manager.

In addition to this newly elected group of managing board and senior board leaders, the staff chose 22 junior board members. About 40 reporters, writers, photographers and other staff members will take on appointed roles as associate editors.
