The CDAA sent out its annual direct mail
request for donations in December. To date, we have received almost $2,800
in donations.
The generous contributions of Cavalier
Daily alumni are used for a variety of projects, including scholarships for
current Cavalier Daily staff members to participate in summer internships
relating to media and journalism. The CDAA also coordinates workshops for
current staff members as well as social activities throughout the year for
the CDAA members.
In addition, the CDAA is continuing to
solicit donations in support of digitization of the College Topics and
Cavalier Daily bound volumes, which encompass 112 years of University
history. (See Page 3). Given the deteriorating state of many of the older
bound volumes, it is critical that we continue to move forward on this
project, and your strong financial support is essential.
Thank you for your continued support of
the CDAA and its activities in support of The Cavalier Daily. If you have
not made a contribution this year, please feel free to send a check to:
Cavalier Daily Alumni Association, P.O. Box 4731 Charlottesville, Va. 22905.
Any amount large or small is greatly appreciated.

During the past two years, the
Cavalier Daily Alumni Association has been actively pursuing contributions
to bolster several worthwhile endeavors the CDAA Board of Directors has
determined to be priorities for the organization. To date, the efforts have
been extremely successful thanks to the generosity and strong commitment of
many former Cavalier Daily staffers.
Donations to the scholarship endowment
program have exceeded all our expectations. Currently, the scholarship
endowment fund totals more than $70,000 and provides important funding for
summer internships for several current Cavalier Daily staff members each
year. We will continue our push to build the endowment fund into a
permanent, stable source of funding to give staffers the valuable experience
and connections that result from exciting summer internships.
Our second major initiative, a fund to
begin digitization of the rapidly deteriorating Cavalier Daily bound
volumes, also has been successful. The digitization fund currently totals
more than $10,000 thanks again to generous contributions by Cavalier Daily
alumni.
The CDAA is continuing to investigate
and evaluate different options and technologies for digitizing the bound
volumes. With the yellowing, fading, and even tearing of older volumes, some
of which date back more than 100 years, it is imperative that we preserve
the bound volumes as soon as possible.
The ultimate goal is to create a
searchable, accessible database of every story in every issue of College
Topics and The Cavalier Daily since the first issue in 1890. This obviously
is a huge undertaking, but imagine what a valuable resource such information
would be—a complete weekly and ultimately daily history of the University
and the Charlottesville area since 1890!
As always, your contributions to these and other
ongoing efforts of the CDAA are greatly appreciated. No donation is too
small and no donation is too large—the main thing is that we all give back a
little bit to the organization that meant so much to us during our days at
U.Va. and thereby ensure the continued success of The Cavalier Daily for
another 100 years and beyond.
Please take a minute to make a
contribution today. Your tax-deductible donation should be made payable to
the "CDAA" and mailed to: David Hallock, P.O. Box 1320, Richmond, Va. 23218.
Thank you for your strong support of the CDAA and The Cavalier Daily!

April 2001
The Cavalier Daily Alumni Associations
fall fund-raising effort was wildly successful with a couple of recent gifts nudging us
over a key milestone to a total of $14,010. Donors contributed $8,845, while matching
gifts counted for $5,165. Since September of last year, 60 donors responded to the
CDAAs direct mail campaign requesting help in growing the endowment to fund
scholarships for student staffers. Those donors who opened their checkbooks to the tune of
$100 or more were rewarded with their choice of a CD hat or T-shirt.
In recent years, scholarships subsidizing unpaid or
underpaid internship positions or projects have been established to help budding
journalists at The Cavalier Daily explore career opportunities and hone their talents. The
scholarships will aid the CD in achieving its goal of remaining competitive with
university-funded newspapers and large journalism schools. More importantly, the
experience the CD staffers gain in their subsidized positions will allow them to remain
competitive once they leave the CD for jobs as professional journalists. (See Scholarship Committee Report.) This fund-raiser was one
way the CDAA is trying to match the efforts of CD staffers to keep the CD on top.
Although responses to the direct mail campaign are
winding down, the drive to fund scholarships continues onward. Tax-deductible gifts are
always welcome and should be made payable to the Cavalier Daily Alumni Association and
sent to P.O. Box 4731, Charlottesville, Va. 22905.

members once a chairperson is appointed. If anyone is interested please contact me via

The Cavalier Daily Alumni Association conducted a
direct mail campaign this summer seeking contributions for the CDAA Endowment Fund. This
fund now supports two annual $1,000 media-related scholarships for Cavalier Daily staff
members. With your generosity, our goal is to expand the total number and amount of our
annual scholarship awards.
