Joanna Kakissis, a reporter at The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., who teaches a journalism class at N.C. State University, spoke to staffers in April about everything from covering local government and organizing feature stories to journalism ethics and writing editorials.

CD Managing Editor Emily Roper and I are working to set up a workshop and conference this fall. If you’re interested in speaking to CD staffers, please call me at (919) 233-1906 or email me at slindenfeld@alumni.virginia.edu.

This spring, Andrea Weigl, a reporter from the Raleigh, N.C., News & Observer, spoke to CD staffers about news writing and journalism. And we’ve begun looking for other speakers interested in meeting with staffers at fall workshops and the annual conference.

If you’re interested in speaking with staffers about your work in journalism, contact me on email at slindenfeld@alumni.virginia.edu or at 919-233-1906.

Lindsay Wise, the CD's managing editor, and the rest of the managing board have taken charge this fall in organizing the annual fall conference. Participants will spend the weekend of Nov. 18 and Nov. 19 with The CD staff, going to the football game and dinner at the Boar's Head Inn. We thank the speakers for their participation.

We'll also begin putting together a slate of speakers for the spring. If any one is interesting in speaking with staffers about their work in journalism, we'd be happy to have you. You can contact me on email at sarahl@kkhh.com or at 919-233-1906.

When Lindsay Wise took over as managing editor in February, she made one thing clear: She wanted regular workshops for The Cavalier Daily staff.

This spring, we have organized three workshops with a total of five speakers, all journalists, to help CD staffers hone their writing, editing and photography skills. The speakers also critique a week’s worth of newspapers. The workshops usually meet on Saturdays and will continue next fall.

In addition, planning for the annual fall conference has already begun. The event lets CD staffers meet working journalists. This year, speakers will focus on the 2000 election season. The conference is tentatively set for after the November elections.

If you are interested in participating in a workshop or the conference, please contact me at 919-233-1906 or SarahL@kkhh.com.

I took the reins from Pat Riccards this spring and am excited to be programming director. I still remember the workshops former director Lisa Guernsey organized when I was a CD staffer. I would like to do the same for the current staff.

Managing Editor Emily Kane is working hard on The Cavalier Daily's annual conference set for October (see Conference). But the Programming Committee also like to set up workshops with CD alumni throughout the year. Whether or not you are a journalist, your experience in the "real world" is invaluable for CD staffers.

The committee is also working on an internship booklet for CD staffers with up-to-date information about journalism internships from around the country. The booklet will include application deadlines, addresses, contact names and information about clips, resumes and cover letters. It also will include inside information from alumni who work or have interned at magazines, newspapers, television stations and online media outlets.

If you would like to tell a CD staffer about your work experiences for the internship booklet, be part of a workshop or help out on the Programming Committee, you can reach me at (919) 233-1906 or sarahl@kkhh.com.

The Programming Committee would like to welcome Emily Kane as the new managing editor of The Cavalier Daily. As we all remember, strong programming has to start with an ME who is eager and interested in improving the skills of the entire staff. Emily is such an ME, and the Programming Committee looks forward to working with her and the 1999-2000 Cavalier Daily staff.

The 1998 Cavalier Daily Conference proved a tremendous success. Building on the efforts of the three previous conferences, former CD Managing Editor Mandy Biles and her staff provided a number of speakers that were able to provide guidance and advice to all departments at the paper. The conference was highlighted by keynote speeches from Baltimore Sun investigative reporter and 1998 Pulitzer Prize-winner Gary Cohn and features writer Mike D’Orso. Special thanks to all of the alumni who gave up their Saturday to participate in this event.

For those of you who are interested in participating in the fifth annual conference, I urge you to contact Emily at the CD offices early. These forums are not only great learning experiences for current staffers, but they also reinvigorate those toiling in the professional journalism circuit.

I am also saddened to announce that this is the end of my tenure as Programming Chair. Unfortunately, job demands make it impossible for me to dedicate the time that the CDAA and The Cavalier Daily deserve. But I look forward to working with the new Programming Chairman and Emily on upcoming activities.

It is nearly impossible to try to fill the shoes of a person like Lisa Guernsey, who poured her time, attention, and heart into the CD and the CDAA. Her contributions as Programming Director over the last several years were beyond measure, and I can only hope that we will be able to build upon the incredibly strong foundations that Lisa has provided.

Working closely with current CD Managing Editor Mandy Biles, the Programming Committee is hard at work planning for the Fourth Annual Cavalier Daily Conference on Sept. 26. All interested parties are welcome to join us. (See Conference.)

As part of our continued efforts to provide insight and guidance to current members of The Cavalier Daily, the Programming Committee urges all interested CD alumni to get involved in programming activities. Whether you are working in the journalism field or not, you have a great deal of information you can provide to current CD staffers. Whether it’s how you got your foot in the door for that first job, how you put your CD skills to use in the "real world," or stories about what you would do differently knowing what you know now, your insights are essential to the continued successes of soon-to-be CD alumni.

If you would like to get involved, please call me at 703-892-1884 or e-mail me at patrickr@twbg.com. The 1998-99 academic year is going to be an exciting programming year for The Cavalier Daily, and we would love for you to be a part of it.

The Programming Committee opened the 1997-98 academic year in great stride, pulling off one of the most successful Cavalier Daily conferences ever.

Two Pulitzer Prize-winning writers—Michael Vitez of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Earl Lane of Newsday—opened the Sept. 20 event with keynote addresses about how to craft awe-inspiring stories. After a brief break for refreshments, the crowd of 50 or more attendees met in smaller groups with workshop leaders who were drawn from newspapers up and down the coast.

Special thanks to Geoff Johnson of The Washington Post, Greg Trevor of the Asbury Park Press, John Spaulding of The Chronicle of Higher Education, Lacy Lusk and Jeff Carlton, then at The Daily Progress, Robert M. O’Neil, a former U.Va. president and First Amendment scholar, and both of our keynote speakers for spending their time with us. Big kudos also go to former managing editor Nancy Youseff, who provided the momentum and organizational skills to keep everything running smoothly.

This spring, the new ME, Mandy Biles, jumped headfirst into workshop planning by bringing Steve Rowe of The Richmond Times-Dispatch to The Cavalier Daily for a well-attended meeting about general aspects of the newspaper.

And lastly, I’d like to welcome another former ME, Pat Riccards, to the helm of the programming committee as I step down. Pat and Mandy are already gearing up for a fantastic conference next fall. Best of luck to both of you.
