As the CDAA marks the 10th year of our highly successful internship scholarship program, this year’s competition attracted a group of exceptionally qualified candidates.

The Scholarship Committee met by conference call and email in March and April. The committee unanimously agreed to award the following internship scholarships:

* Natasha Altamirano, a third-year College student and news editor, received the Herring Scholarship, which will help pay her expenses while she works an unpaid internship at the Daily News Record in Harrisonburg.

* Rebecca Davis, a third-year College student and former associate photo editor who is studying abroad in France this semester, received the Pierson Scholarship. The scholarship will help offset the cost of a two-week summer workshop she is attending in Colorado on communicating through photography. This workshop will provide valuable skills that Rebecca will bring back to the CD in the fall.

* Rebecca Piedel, a third-year College student and associate sports editor, received the CDAA/VPA Internship Scholarship. Rebecca will work at the Fredericksburg Freelance-Star.

Cavalier Daily Managing Editor Kara Rowland deserves commendation for her very helpful cooperation throughout the selection process. She gathered the necessary materials quickly and efficiently, and provided valuable insights during the committee’s deliberations.

Over the past 10 years, the CDAA has awarded more than $30,000 in internship scholarships to help Cavalier Daily staff members acquire valuable journalism skills.

Spring 2004

The summer of 2003 was very successful for the CDAA’s scholarship program. Both recipients had outstanding internships with their respective media outlets.

  • Herring recipient Josh Goodman spent the summer working for Governing.com, where his work included a series examining digital surveillance and online privacy.
  • CDAA/VPA recipient Becky Krystal worked for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Her work ranged from stories about the tragic death of a Chesterfield County police officer to a feature about a Vietnam veteran awaiting a heart transplant.
  • The committee was unable to award a Pierson scholarship for the summer of 2003 because there were no applicants.

Responses continue to trickle in from the committee’s survey of past scholarship recipients. Although we are still awaiting responses from a majority of the recipients, one thing is clear – the staff would like more information about the benefits of the scholarship program. To that end, the committee is working with ME Chris Wilson to provide more information and generate greater interest in the program.

As requested, the committee has researched the issue of payroll taxes for scholarship recipients. Because we provide the money in a lump sum – either directly to the recipient or through the host media organization – the CDAA is not responsible for these taxes.

If the recipient is paid a salary from the host organization, then the organization is responsible. If the recipient is paid in a lump sum, then he or she is responsible for the taxes. The situation is comparable to free-lance work.

In either case, the recipient is not an employee of the CDAA. The VPA follows the same approach in its summer scholarship program.

The only outstanding issue that the Board must address at the Fall meeting is the size of the CDAA/VPA scholarship for the summer of 2004. As you might recall, last year the Board voted to increase the size of the scholarship from $3,000 to $4,000 on a one-time basis for the summer of 2003. This was possible because the scholarship was not awarded for 2002. Maintaining this increase for an additional year would depend on the available funding.

Following up on the March strategic planning session and the outcome of this past summer’s internship scholarship program, the Scholarship Committee is pursuing short-term and long-term changes to the application process. These changes will help ensure that the program will attract a greater number of applicants, and will maximize summer employment opportunities for the recipients. The application forms for all three internships are being reviewed and modified to make the programs’ requirements clearer.

Two key issues raised during the CDAA strategic planning session were the need to maintain communication with past scholarship recipients and the importance of evaluating the program to ensure it continues to serve the needs of the current staff. To address these issues, the committee will draft a survey that will be sent to all prior recipients. This survey will help the committee determine how effectively the scholarship program has helped recipients and the CD staff as a whole in terms of journalistic training and career preparation.

Finally, as part of the committee’s efforts to maximize the potential of the scholarship program, members have discussed the importance of working directly with the CD staff to stimulate interest in the program and to address any concerns that might arise. CDAA Vice President and scholarship committee member Lisa Guernsey has volunteered to fulfill this role and traveled to Charlottesville in October to meet with students.

There also has been discussion about expanding the committee’s size and including at least one member who lives in or around Charlottesville. If you are interested in participating, or know of anyone who might be interested, please contact me at gtrevor@panynj.gov.

The Scholarship Committee met by teleconference in April to consider numerous qualified candidates for the Herring, Pierson and CDAA/VPA scholarships.

After a detailed discussion, the committee voted to award the following scholarships:

The $1,000 Herring Scholarship: to John McArdle, a rising fourth-year student who is spending the summer as a writing intern at Roll Call, Capitol Hill’s biweekly newspaper.

The $1,000 Pierson Memorial Photography Scholarship: to Brady Wolfe, a rising fourth-year student who will work this summer as a photography intern at the Daily Progress in Charlottesville.

The $3,500 CDAA/VPA internship: to rising third-year student Laura Parcells. The CDAA is currently working with Parcells and the VPA to find a mutually agreeable position.

Thanks to the generosity of Cavalier Daily and College Topics alumni, since 1995 the scholarship program has awarded 19 scholarships, totaling more than $22,000.

In addition, the committee plans to contact past scholarship recipients to solicit suggestions to improve the program. We also welcome input from alumni. I am very pleased to report that all four of this past summer’s recipients of financial support from the Scholarship Committee—beneficiaries of the highest level of monetary support in the program’s five-year history—successfully completed a wide range of internships.

Compared to previous summers, the most significant change was the awarding of the first Cavalier Daily Alumni Association/Virginia Press Association Internship for Community Journalism—a 10-week, $300-a-week internship that will continue to be fully funded by a CDAA endowment. Cavalier Daily News Editor Katie Dalton, the first recipient, performed so capably that her employer, The Daily Progress, has given her a standing offer to return there.

The summer’s recipients of two $1,000 Herring scholarships had very positive experiences with their internships in New York. Arts & Entertainment Editor Doug Strassler worked in the publishing industry, while Sports Editor James Reedy worked for the late Sport Magazine and its reincarnation, FHM Sport. Also, Photography Editor Daniel Lopez, recipient of the $1,000 Pierson photography scholarship, compiled an impressive portfolio while traveling through Texas this past summer.

Since the scholarship program began in 1995, the Cavalier Daily Alumni Association has awarded 15 scholarships worth more than $15,000 to highly qualified Cavalier Daily staff members pursuing journalism careers. The Cavalier Daily Alumni Association will continue to work with the Cavalier Daily staff, as well as the Virginia Press Association, to further improve the scholarship program, making it even more responsive to the needs of CD staffers.

The Scholarship Committee met April 7 at the Virginia Press Association’s offices to award the CDAA/VPA Internship for Community Journalism. The new 10-week, $300-a-week internship is funded by a CDAA endowment that has reached $68,000—thanks to overwhelming support from our alumni.

This summer’s scholarship was awarded to Katie Dalton, a second-year student and Cavalier Daily news editor, who will intern at Charlottesville’s Daily Progress, her first choice paper.

The committee also awarded two $1,000 Herring internship scholarships for this summer. James Reedy, a third-year student and CD sports editor, will intern at Sport Magazine in New York. Doug Strassler, a third-year student and CD arts and entertainment editor, is competing for internships at features and entertainment publications in New York.

Daniel Lopez, a third-year student and CD photography editor, received the $1,000 Pierson photography scholarship. He will work for the Smithsonian Institution’s Botany Department, producing photos of the department’s collection. He also will travel to Hidalgo County, Texas, to document living conditions among the poor.

The Scholarship Committee is excited to announce that, in conjunction with the Virginia Press Association, the Cavalier Daily Alumni Association will offer an annual, fully funded internship with a VPA member paper to a qualified Cavalier Daily staff member beginning in the summer of 2000. This project has been a goal of the CDAA for five years. (For details, see VPA/CDAA.) Application information is now available online. The deadline is January 3, 2000.

In addition, based on donations and pledges resulting from our ongoing fund-raising efforts, the committee is pleased to report that the CDAA has met its initial goal to raise at least $40,000 to fund a permanent endowment for internships and scholarships. Future donations earmarked for the endowment will be used to fund additional internships and scholarships.

Three Cavalier Daily staff members were the recipients of the most recent Herring, Pierson and CDAA scholarships. For information on how they spent their summers and what they learned, see Internships.

Since this program began in 1995, the CDAA has awarded nearly $10,000 in scholarships to highly qualified Cavalier Daily staff members pursuing journalism careers. These staff members have used this money to defray living costs and other expenses while working as summer interns and in other media-related jobs. As part of this program, the recipients are expected to return to The Cavalier Daily and pass along their newfound knowledge to their fellow staffers. This program is one of the most successful ways that the Cavalier Daily Alumni Association is fulfilling its core mission to provide journalistic educational opportunities to the Cavalier Daily staff.

September 1999

Since it was founded in 1983, the Cavalier Daily Alumni Association has helped enhance the educational opportunities of Cavalier Daily staff members and other University students—by sponsoring guest speakers and workshops on all aspects of journalism.

For the past four years, the CDAA has expanded our educational mission with a more direct form of support—$1,000 and $500 scholarships awarded to CD writers, photographers and editors who have received unpaid or low-paid summer internships.

As of this summer, the CDAA will have awarded nearly $10,000 in scholarships to deserving students for internships in print journalism, broadcasting, photography and other communications positions.

This summer, in addition to the $1,000 Herring Scholarship and the $1,000 Pierson Scholarship, the CDAA plans to award a new scholarship—the "Cavalier Daily Alumni Association Award," a $1,000 stipend that will go to a qualified CD staff member working in Virginia. The CDAA plans to award all three scholarships at the board’s spring meeting; winners will be announced in the September edition of College Topics.

Also, the Cavalier Daily Alumni Association has begun looking into the creation of a permanent scholarship endowment. This would allow the organization to continue awarding its existing scholarships for the foreseeable future and to create additional awards. One option under serious discussion is the possible creation of a permanent internship slot at a Virginia newspaper, which would be guaranteed to a Cavalier Daily staff member each summer.

If you have any comments or suggestions, or if you would like to make a donation toward a scholarship endowment, please contact me at 732-843-6803 (home) or at gtrevor@earthlink.net.

At a meeting on Saturday, Apr. 18, the Scholarship Committee selected the recipients of this year’s Herring and Pierson scholarships. (See May 1998 issue of College Topics for more information.) Based on the number of highly qualified applicants for the awards, during the CDAA Board meeting the following day, the committee recommended the establishment of an additional $1,000 scholarship to begin in the spring of 1999. The Board unanimously approved the recommendation.

The committee plans to meet in the fall to determine terms of the award. If you have any input on this or any other scholarship-related issue, please feel free to contact me at 732-843-6803.
